Background introduction
A basement planting roof is a landscaped podium built above an underground structure. Besides preventing water infiltration, the waterproofing system must also resist plant root penetration, soil moisture, fertilizers, and long-term exposure to a constantly damp environment. Once landscaping is completed, repairing waterproofing defects becomes difficult and expensive.
A root-resistant waterproofing membrane is therefore essential. PCM Root Puncture Resistant-Type Polymer Modified Asphalt Waterproof Membrane provides dual protection by combining reliable waterproofing performance with long-term resistance to plant root penetration, ensuring the durability of both the waterproofing system and the landscaped area.
Program description
2. Prepare the substrate by ensuring it is smooth, clean, dry, and structurally sound. Repair cracks and surface defects where necessary.
3. Apply a compatible bituminous primer evenly over the substrate and allow it to dry.
4. Reinforce corners, drains, expansion joints, pipe penetrations, and other critical details with additional waterproofing treatment.
5. Install the PCM Root Puncture Resistant-Type Polymer Modified Asphalt Waterproof Membrane using the hot-melt torch-on method.
6. Ensure all membrane laps are fully bonded and sealed with a minimum overlap of 80 mm.
7. Install a protection layer, drainage board, filter fabric (geotextile), and other landscape system components as required.
8. Complete the planting medium and landscape finishes according to the project design.
Matters needing attention
● Repair all cracks, honeycombs, and surface defects before waterproofing application.
● Reinforce waterproofing details around corners, drains, expansion joints, pipe penetrations, and upstands.
● Ensure all membrane overlaps are fully heat-welded and securely sealed to maintain waterproof integrity.
● Protect the completed waterproofing membrane from mechanical damage during installation of drainage boards, geotextiles, and landscaping works.
● Conduct a water ponding test where applicable before installing the protection and planting layers.
● Avoid damaging the waterproofing membrane during soil placement, planting, or subsequent construction activities.
● Ensure the complete planting roof system, including drainage and filter layers, is installed in accordance with the project design to prevent water accumulation and promote healthy plant growth.
